La Sepultura Biosphere Reserve

The La Sepultura Biosphere Reserve, located in the Sierra Madre de Chiapas, protects unique ecosystems of the country, even today new species of flora and fauna, that can only be found here, are still being discovered. In its almost 170 thousand hectares, it protects Tropical and Subtropical Dry Broadleaf Forests, Tropical Rainforests, Temperate Pine-Oak Forests, and Cloud Forests. Showing off the uniqueness of the Istmo de Tehuantepec region, in its hillsides and ravines covered by Tropical and subtropical Dry Broadleaf Forests, and Tropical Rainforest, 2 microendemic birds can be found: the Rose-bellied Bunting or Rosita's Bunting (Passerina rositae), and the Cinnamon-tailed Sparrow (Peucaea sumichrasti). These feathered jewels atract, year after year, hundreds of birdwatchers from all over the world, who visit them with the hope of getting a glimpse or a magnificent photograph of these 2 birds intertwined by geography and the history of natural sciences.
